Want to save some extra money this holiday season? We want our clients to avoid spending an excessive amount on repairs that can be avoided with some simple care and preventive measures. Here are a few tips to help your HVAC system get ready for that holiday dinner and make sure you save a little extra before the new year.
Do regularly clean your HVAC system
This tip might be the most overlooked chore because it can be easy to forget, but regularly cleaning your air filters and air ducts goes a long way! The best time to replace or clean your air filters is every two to three months, which is roughly seasonally, which can dramatically improve your air quality. Cleaner air filters also mean far less strain on your HVAC system that can lead to broken components. Take the time to inspect vents and clean around the area to remove any dust or grime.
Don’t close your air vents.
We are unsure where this tip got famous, but please do not close your air vents to save money on heating! While the logic behind closing air vents in rooms you will not occupy seems foolproof, in reality, you are doing more harm than good. Closing air vents can cause a build-up of pressure in your air ducts that can put extra strain on your HVAC system that will only land you with repairs down the road. Also, you don't save money as you are still using the same amount of energy to heat your home but now have uneven heating across your home due to some closed air vents.
Do seal up cracks
If you find cracks around your windows or doors across your home, take the time to seal them up with caulk or weatherstripping. Not only can insulation help you spend less on your energy bills, but running your HVAC system far less often can reduce strain on the motor.
Don’t skimp on maintenance.
The worst thing you can do is skip out on regular maintenance in an attempt to save an extra buck. While you think you might be saving more money, in reality, you are setting yourself up for an enormous bill in the future. Skipping on maintenance can cause you to not spot potential leaks in your ducts or even HVAC refrigerant and even motor issues. Leaving HVAC problems to go on without any proper care can land you in a heap of trouble as, over time, a simple repair may not suffice anymore, and you will be looking at paying for the installation of a new system altogether.
